Today’s Technology and Clean Rooms Go Hand in Hand

Kelly Dec 14 2008

We’ve all seen the white bootie clad scientists or clinicians wearing sterile gowns in sealed off rooms where the absence of particulate dust is absolutely required. These ‘clean rooms’ are used in a wide variety of manufacturing, scientific or medical settings, and there is a growing demand for these specially controlled environments. Due to this high demand for contaminant free spaces, and the  high costs of building them, the concept of portable clean rooms was born.

Portable clean rooms can be prefabricated and delivered to any site using, essentially, two types of construction: ‘hard wall’ and ‘soft wall’ portable clean rooms are self-explanatory with respect to the types of materials that are used to envelop a particulate free environment. Hard wall clean rooms are generally used where more permanence is desired, while the soft wall spaces are created for situations where other facilities will eventually take their place. As a general rule, soft wall clean rooms are less expensive than rigid construction and will oftentimes be chosen when budget constraints are an issue. Just a few of the applications for clean rooms are:

  • The micro chip and advanced electronics industry
  • Companies involved in pharmaceutical research
  • Medical research facilities
  • Aerospace and aviation manufacturing applications
  • Sterile products packaging facilities
  • Bio-medical research and patient isolation units and more

It Isn’t Easy Keeping Clean Rooms Clean

One thing about dust, it always seems to find a way to get into our home. Most of the dust found in the home, such as that which collects on a TV or computer screen, is no more than dead skin cells that have been sloughed off our own body. This is one of the reasons for the clean rooms rule about keeping the human body covered from head to toe. Clean rooms are designed by individuals who have anticipated every conceivable point of entry for contaminants, and for each of these points, an engineering and personnel procedures solution has been found. Portable clean rooms are wholly self-contained environments that rely primarily on High Efficiency Particulate Air (HEPA) filtration technology to maintain the dust free environments that give these modularized spaces their name. Portable clean rooms will usually offer features such as:

  • Special antechambers for personnel gowning
  • Special, easy to clean and stay clean materials for floors and walls
  • Airtight or negative pressure pass-thru openings
  • Specially designed doors and windows of  various types and sizes
  • Airlock designs
  • Specialized wall sections that are moveable for additional room configuration flexibility

Modular Clean Rooms can be Constructed in a Few Days

Unlike the construction of permanent clean rooms, a modularized, self-contained unit can be erected and operational in a few days to a week. All internal systems such as electrical power, lighting, air filtration, voice communications, etc., are already built into the unit and, in essence, these systems merely need to be plugged in. When you need a dust free environment, please consider portable clean rooms as a fast, reliable, and economical solution.
